CITY CHARTER

ELECTION CALENDAR
The 2018 Election Calendar provides relevant dates and deadlines.

APPLICATION FOR A PLACE ON THE BALLOT
The Application for a Place on the Ballot must be received by Friday, February 16, 2018, by 5:00pm. There is no filing fee. Please note the application includes space for an e-mail address to be provided at your option. All information, with the exception of your e-mail address, is public record. If you list your e-mail address but do not want it made public, please advise when you file your application with the City Secretary’s office so that we may redact this information when furnishing it as a public record.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE GUIDE
Campaign Finance Guide for Candidates and Officeholders from the Texas Ethics Commission.

APPOINTMENT OF A CAMPAIGN TREASURER BY A CANDIDATE
The Appointment of a Campaign Treasurer Instruction Guide along with the Appointment of a Campaign Treasurer by a Candidate Form. It is recommended this form be filed at the same time you file your application for a place on the ballot. As you read over some of the materials you will see the reasoning for this. 

CODE OF FAIR CAMPAIGN PRACTICES
Pursuant to Chapter 258 of the Election Code, every candidate and political committee is encouraged to subscribe to the Code of Fair Campaign Practices. Subscription to the Code of Fair Campaign Practices and completion of the Code of Fair Campaign Practices Form is voluntary.

2018 FILING SCHEDULE FOR REPORTS
The Texas Ethics Commission 2018 Filing Schedule for Reports due in connection with Elections held on Uniform Election Dates (May 5, 2018). 

CANDIDATE/OFFICEHOLDER CAMPAIGN FINANCE REPORT
It is the duty of the candidate to become familiar with the law applicable to campaigns for office. Included are the Campaign Finance Report Instruction Guide and the Candidate/Officeholder Campaign Finance Report Form (you may need three report form copies, depending on your particular campaign).

POLITICAL ADVERTISING
The Texas Election Law requires certain disclosures and notices on political advertising. Included is a guide from the Texas Ethics Commission, Political Advertising – What You Need to Know.

PLACEMENT OF POLITICAL SIGNS IN THE CITY
A City-generated memo regarding your campaign signs. 

REGULATING POLITICAL FUNDS AND CAMPAIGNS
Title 15, Election Code, Regulating Political Funds and Campaigns. It is the duty of the candidate to become familiar with the laws applicable to campaigns for office. The Texas Ethics Commission has oversight of these regulations and can be reached at (phone) 512.463.5800, (fax) 512.463.5777, or (online) www.ethics.state.tx.us.

While the City Secretary's Office will help you to the extent possible with these forms, the duty of the City Secretary is limited to accepting and filing the various applications, affidavits, and statements and noting the date and time of filing thereon. This office is not expected to judge or comment upon the timeliness or sufficiency of reports filed. If you have questions about filings, you are encouraged to contact the Ethics Commission. All documents filed with the City Secretary are kept in the local office. They are not required to be forwarded to any other agency; however, they are public records and are subject to inspection by any person.
