Sewer Overflows Prevention
How Overflows Happen
Sewer overflows occur when structural restrictions occur in sewer lines and when the hydraulic capacity of sewer lines is exceeded.

Sewer overflows are illegal, and avoidable actions which cause them are illegal. Sewer overflows also cost money to clean up and may lead to regulatory fines for customers.

How to Prevent Overflows
Water / sewer customers can help prevent sewer overflows by assuring that they do not introduce damaging wastes or unnecessary flows into the sewer system.

These wastes and unnecessary flows include, but are not limited to:
  • Debris which should be placed in garbage instead of the sewer system
  • Food, oil, and grease from food preparation
  • Rainfall, stormwater runoff, and irrigation runoff
