JOB SUMMARY:        Conducts investigations of assigned cases to identify and apprehend offenders and solve criminal cases; conducts follow-up investigations as directed. Responds to crime scenes, receives an initial report from the Officer(s) on patrol. Investigate suspected crimes and the facts of particular cases to detect criminal activity and clues. Obtains and serves search and criminal warrants; apprehends and arrests suspects. Interviews complainants, witnesses, victims, suspects and informants in person and by telephone; obtains statements.  Plans court presentations with prosecuting attorneys, presents evidence and information, and testifies in judicial proceedings. Develop intelligence resources for use in investigations. Reviews investigative information; writes and files case reports. Assists other law enforcement agencies with investigations upon request; provides information on criminal activity to federal, state and local law enforcement agents. Attend training sessions as required. Performs other related duties as directed.  


  • Knowledge of federal, state, criminal laws and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of criminal investigation methods, practices and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and court procedures.
  • Skill in the use of firearms, communications equipment, and other standard and specialized equipment.
  • Skill in the use of photographic and surveillance equipment, audio and video equipment, radios and various emergency equipment.
  • Skill in interview techniques.
  • Possesses good oral and written communication capabilities.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position and the ability to conduct visual and mobile surveillance for long periods of time during unusual hours including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime;
  • Speak, read and write the English language in a clear, concise and understandable fashion;
  • Posses a valid Texas driver’s license;
  • Hold at least an Advanced Peace Officer proficiency certificate through TCOLE; Have a minimum seven (7) years’ experience as a full time Investigator/Detective.
  • Be a licensed Texas Peace Officer for at least the past 5 years.
  • Currently and successfully qualified with a duty firearm;
  • Pass a background review and interview board; and
  • Has successfully completed a Field Training Program.
  • Ability of learning Criminal Intelligence gathering.
  • Ability of learning to identify Gang Members and the different types of gangs operating in our County.
  • Ability of learning some Analytical tools.
