Citizen Input Wanted!

  1. CNB_Logo_Tag_FullColor_rgb

  2. The City of Nassau Bay is requesting your input!

As you may be aware, the NASA 1 median has lost more than a dozen trees over the past few months due to the lingering effects of the hard freeze after Hurricane Harvey.

The City of Nassau Bay requests your input on this topic so a long-term solution can be presented to City Council.

  3. CURRENT FACTS

  4. The palm trees on NASA 1 are currently paid for by the Economic Development Corporation (EDC), which is a separate entity than the City. Sales taxes generated in the commercial corridor are the funding source for the EDC; no property taxes go to the EDC. This group currently pays $45,000 a year to replace three (3) trees, but the extent of the damage may require an additional funding source. Currently, it will cost approximately $200,000 to replace the palm trees that have died along NASA 1 and inside the City’s Town Square.

Medjool Date Palm Tree – $13,500 per each tree to replace. The medjool date palm tree is native to desert soils and is not ideal for the heavy soils and humidity of the region. The City currently replaces three (3) trees a year due to lightning, disease, or unknown factors.

Ongoing maintenance – $36,000 annually for preventative maintenance against the leafhopper bug infestation.
