Crime Prevention
You can protect yourself and those around you from criminals and their illegal actions. We have found that these activities typically involve auto theft, burglary and theft of items from homes and businesses, persons who use computers to entrap our children, and activities of gangs. The following tips can help you prevent these crimes from happening.
Auto
Theft Prevention
- As soon as you're in your vehicle, lock the door, fasten your seat belt, start the engine and put it in gear so you'll be able to drive away quickly if someone approaches or threatens you.
- Never leave your car running.
- Remove the ignition keys.
- Take you keys. Never hide a spare key on the vehicle.
- If you have a garage, use and lock your garage door.
- When you leave your vehicle at a parking garage or repair shop, leave only your vehicle key. Be sure to remove remote control garage door openers.
- Keep your vehicle's license plate number and vehicle identification number in your billfold.
Preventing
Burglary and Theft
- Keep yard gates closed and locked.
- Motion detector spotlights are effective deterrents.
- Get to know your neighbors and arrange to watch each other's homes.
- Install solid hardwood or metal exterior doors with deadbolts.
- Secure all windows and glass doors with sturdy locks.
- Mark all major items in your home with your driver's license number for easy identification by the police.
- When you are gone, use timers for lights in different rooms.
- If it appears someone has broken into your home, do not enter. Call the police immediately.
Computers:
How to Protect Your Children
- Keep an eye on your child's usage. Check into your Internet access provider's policies about sexually explicit information.
- Caution your child never to give out any personal information over the network, such as full name or address.
- Talk with your children about abusers. Explain that, while most users are trustworthy people, some are not. Urge your child to inform you if someone requests personal information or says anything that makes your child uncomfortable.
- Know your child's friends - including their e-mail friends.
- If your child wants to meet someone face to face after first meeting through a computer network, check it out. Go with your child. Be aware and supervise.
- Abusers are using the computer to reach children. Through networks and bulletin boards, pedophiles may establish a friendship with a child. After communicating back and forth for a time, the abuser may suggest a meeting. Pedophiles are often very good at making friends with children, and the child may forget that his computer "buddy" is really a stranger.
- Internet access services have made efforts to block sexually orientated sites, but it is still possible for children to access pornographic images and stories. They can even download and print this material.
- If you suspect an abuse report it immediately to your local police department.
Gangs
- Learn about gangs and signs of gang activity.
- Look for specific colors or emblems on clothing and the way it is worn.
- Keep an eye out for gang symbols written on walls or other places. This is called ‘tagging’.
- Look for major or negative behavior changes; sliding grades, staying out late, or carrying weapons.
- Have your child explain relatively large sums of money.
- Talk with and listen to your children.
- Help your children identify positive role models and heroes - especially people in your community.
- Praise your children for doing well and encourage them to do their very best in school.
- Know what your children are doing and where they are socializing - get to know their friends.
- Educate your children about gangs before there's a problem.
