Star City, Our Sister City

The City of Nassau Bay and Star City, Russia, signed a sister city agreement July 13, 1993, at a ceremony held at Space Center Houston. The sister city alliance led to the development of an annual Russian Festival, hosted by Nassau Bay, designed to educate area residents on Russian culture.

Located immediately adjacent to Johnson Space Center, the City of Nassau Bay is a unique community who counts among its residents astronauts, cosmonauts, scientists and others who train and work at NASA.

The sister city alliance with Star City, Russia, also the home of the Russian equivalent of JSC, has led to a host of activities and cultural exchanges between the two cities. (Star City image courtesy of Life Magazine.)

Sister city affiliations between the United States and other nations began shortly after World War II and developed into a national initiative when President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed the people-to-people program at a White House Conference in 1956Originally housed as part of the National League of Cities, SCI became a separate, not-for-profit organization in 1967 due to the tremendous growth and popularity of the US program.

President Eisenhower's intention was to involve people and organized groups at all levels of our society in personal, citizen diplomacy with the hope that people to people relationships, fostered through sister city affiliations, would lessen the chance of future world conflicts, such as World War II.
